Themes

The September 2002 conference organised by CMI and PRIO addressed a number of themes regarded as important for the Afghan peacebuilding process. This included an understanding of the development of the Afghan State and civil society, the direction and effectiveness of humanitarian assistance and its impact on repatriation and resettlement. Protection and furtherance of human rights and gender issues are another important element, as are the wider regional security issues which address the role played by state and non-state actors in the regional and international contexts.

Some themes with particular influence on the Afghan peacebuilding process are given a wider presentation, as the issue of human rights, the activities and opinions of humanitarian organizations and the Afghan civil society, rehabilitation and development efforts and regional security issues.
