Ownership and Everyday Peacebuilding

Lack of local ownership is seen as a central explanation for why peacebuilding efforts fail to yield sustainable peace dividends. Based on research in Afghanistan, Haiti, Liberia and Sudan, this study shows that external actors foster unsustainable reform efforts because they assume ownership as a conditional right as their to give when certain conditions are met. Later in life he helped draft South Africa's post-apartheid Constitution, and served as a member of the Constitutional Court for fifteen years.
