Kolstad is an economist whose research interests cover game theory, ethics, public economics and international economics. He was head of the CMI Human Rights Programme 2005-2009, and coordinator of the strategic institute programme Business Ethics for Multinational Corporations in Developing Countries. He has a PhD in game theory from the Norwegian School of Economics and Business Administration. Kolstad has done research on corruption, natural resources, business ethics, entrepreneurship, inequality, FDI, trade, aid, and public financial management.
