Human geographer with extensive experience in research and teaching. Specialisation in African fisheries, gender, market trade, small-scale entrepreneurship and resource management. The research has focused on the interconnectedness of social and economic relations in the strategies of entrepreneurs in processes of technological and economic change in small-scale fisheries. In particular the role of women and of credit and fish marketing systems have been analysed in order to understand the dynamics of fisheries development in Africa. Socio-economic processes in local communities are viewed in context of processes on other geographical levels; from household level to the regional, national and global.

Overå is professor at the University of Bergen, Institute of Geography.
