In her doctoral thesis, Liv Tønnessen identifies three different groups promoting competing gender ideologies for and against the state. Parts of the opposition are more conservative than the Islamist state ever imagined. Tønnessen sees this as a reminder not to demonize the Sudanese state, whilst romanticizing the opposition.
