Hindu nationalism and its forms of excess

12.11.2019 09:30 - English

Kathinka Frøystad, Professor of Modern South Asian Studies, University of Oslo.

Fuelled by humiliation over loss of territory at independence and Hindu anxieties over minoritization, Hindu nationalism now dominates the political scene in India. Its main political party – the Bharatiya Janata Party – enjoys a comfortable majority in the Parliament, which gives it a unique window of opportunity to implement far-reaching changes.

Which long-term changes do Hindu nationalists envision? Which anxieties are they rooted in? And which forms of excess has the new ideological normal resulted in, whether by state or non-state actors?
