In a new project, CMI and PRIO will examine the role and significance of religious groups and networks in the development of Afghan civil society. What are the potential lines of tension and collaboration among secular and religious civil society actors? The project intends to bring the role of religious actors to the centre of the civil society debate in Afghanistan's peace, reconciliation and development processes.

The Norwegian Minister for International Development will give the Chr. Michelsen Lecture 2006 at the CMI Annual Meeting 15 March. Solheim was the chief Norwegian peace envoy to Sri Lanka before he became a Minister last year. He has continued his commitment to the peaceprocess in Sri Lanka in his new position. Now, he is also responsible for following up Norway's commitments to the peace process in Sudan.

Can a peaceprocess be respected if "peacemaking forces" violate human rights? asks senior researcher and Afghan expert Dr. Arne Strand. In Afghanistan there is a deliberate neglect of human rights by the Afghan government and the UN and - certainly, by the Operation Enduring Freedom - in fear that the warlords would not accept inducement if they could be held accountable for past human rights atrocities.

To launch the new programme Politics of Faith, CMI is currently seeking a Programme Director for a period of 3 years with a possible 2-year extension, and a Post-Doc Researcher for a period of 3 years. The Programme Director will lead and develop the new research programme. The post-doc researcher will work with his/her own research project and develop the programme together with the Director.

CMI is currently seeking a researcher/social anthropologist for a full-time permanent position. The position is not linked to any particular research area or region. The new researcher will be a member of the social anthropology group (approx. 10 researchers).
