Asset recovery and illicit financial flows from a developmental perspective: Concepts, scope, and potential
The transfer abroad of assets acquired through corruption deprives developing countries of their domestic resources. Asset recovery offers a path to repatriate ill-gotten gains, but the amounts recovered pale in comparison to the estimated outflows. Through development cooperation, mutual legal assistance, and financial transparency, practitioners can build on the various foreign policies and regulations to curb illicit financial flows and recover stolen assets.
