Commissioned research and consultancies

CMI's research forms a strong academic and professional base for our commissioned studies and consultancies which constitute more than half of our activities and project revenue. Our basic research activities help ensure the academic soundness of commissioned work, while our close connection with national and international markets, through commissioned work, helps ensure the relevance and usefulness in relation to our clients.

Many CMI researchers have worked for multilateral or bilateral agencies, national ministries and international NGOs in developing countries. It is CMI staff policy to encourage and help staff gain such exposure to ensure the quality and relevance of our policy research.

Commissioned research also benefits from our extensive network of close institutional and individual research partners in the South.

CMI subscribes to the DAC evaluation quality standards, and implements quality control system with internal peer reviews. Major studies will in addition have external quality control arrangements.

In an evaluation in 2007 CMI received very high ratings for quality and relevance.
