Are Knudsen is a social anthropologist with twenty years research experience in South Asia and the Middle East. Knudsen is scientific co-ordinator of for CMI's research co-operation with Muwatin, the Palestinian Institute for the Study of Democracy (www.muwatin.org) and was Research Director leading the PCS-group from 2006-09. Knudsen is the author of Violence and Belonging: Land  Love and Lethal Conflict in the North-West Frontier Province of Pakistan (NIAS Press, 2009) and has published articles on contested forms of traditional justice ("honour killings") in Pakistan, Islamism among Palestinian refugees in Lebanon and the Palestinian Hamas. Knudsen is currently involved in research on conflict and co-existence in post-civil war Lebanon, Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon and the democratic turn within Hamas, all funded by the Research Council of Norway. With Sari Hanafi (AUB), Are Knudsen is editor of Palestinian Refugees: Identity, Space and Place in the Levant, Routledge Studies on the Arab-Israeli Conflict, forthcoming December 2010.
