Villanger is an economist doing research on poverty and income mobility analysis, the rural economy, gender equality, bonded labour, foreign aid and multilateral organisations. Interested in the documentation of results of development efforts, he has participated in a range of studies on monitoring and evaluation of foreign aid. Villanger's geographical focus is on Africa and South Asia, and he has worked in Ethiopia, Namibia, Nepal, Malaysia, Mozambique and Sudan. He holds a Ph.D. from 2003 (Dr. Oecon. From the Norwegian School of Economics), and has taught development economics at the University of Bergen. Engaged in politics, he has 16 years of experience as an elected local politician, and held the Deputy Major position of the Municipality of Fjell from 2003 to 2007.
