Liv Tønnessen has a PhD in political science from the University of Bergen. Her research focuses on the intersection between Islam, politics and gender. She has a track record from the Middle East and northern Africa with long term stays in Sudan, Lebanon and Syria. Tønnessen speaks Arabic and has published on Islamism, Islamic feminism, legal pluralism and gender justice and women’s rights and gender based violence. Tønnessen is the co-ordinator of a research cluster on Gender Politics at CMI. She is also co-ordinating a seminar series on gender based violence and human rights accountability, which is a co-operation between CMI and the University of Bergen Tønnessen is additionally a board member of the Nordic Society for Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies and an external advisor in Forum for Women and Development within the area of women in conflict and war.
