ADAPT is a research project exploring the relationship between migration, climate change, and sustainable land use in developing countries. Working in rural communities in Nepal and Uganda, the project looks at how migration shapes land use practices and how mobility can support climate adaptation and more sustainable livelihoods.
Climate change and environmental degradation are already affecting agricultural land, water access, and food security in many rural areas. In response, migration has become an increasingly important strategy for individuals and households seeking new opportunities and ways to adapt. ADAPT examines how migration can influence farming practices, land management, and local resilience in places of origin.
The project brings together researchers and practitioners from Norway, Nepal, and Uganda to study these questions through surveys, spatial analysis, participatory mapping, and community-based fieldwork. By combining local experiences with broader environmental and migration research, ADAPT aims to better understand the conditions under which migration can contribute positively to sustainable and climate-adaptive land use.
Alongside its research activities, ADAPT will work closely with local organisations, stakeholders, and communities to ensure that project findings are relevant for both policy and practice.
