This textbook in political science is the first that applies examples from Malawi. The book project was part of the three year project The institutional context of the 2004 elections in Malawi funded by The Norwegian Programme for Development, Research and Education (NUFU) and the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Lilongwe.

The project is a co-operation project between Centre for Social Research (CSR) of the University of Malawi and CMI.
Arne Tostensen co-ordinated the project.

"The genesis of this book is unique in that it is the product of a collaboaration which encompasses intensive intellectual engagement and cross-fertilisation of ideas between acknowledged Norwegian and Malawian scholars," says Prof. Z.D. Kadzima, Vice Chancellor, University of Malawi. "It demonstrates how North-South joint research can produce interesting insights."
