The Arab Spring is a critical juncture for examining Hamas. Hamas was a movement created in the context of a popular revolt against (Israeli) occupation, similar to those now reverberating throughout the Middle East. From its inception during the first intifada (1987-1993), Hamas has developed from movement, to party, to governing body. With invited scholars specializing in Palestinian politics and Hamas from Palestine, Europe and Norway, this workshop seeks a deeper understanding of Hamas’ tactical and strategic options, ideological and political goals, and potential future trajectories amidst profound challenges to its traditional allies (Iran, Syria), leadership (politburo), operations (Damascus base), national unity (Fatah, PLO) and internal governance (“inside” vs. “outside” leadership).
