The Adventure Continues Abroad - Norway’s role as an oil superpower

The discovery of oil in the North Sea in 1969 made Norway one of the richest countries in the world. Today, Norway secures this wealth for the future through extensive foreign operation and investment. Is Norway an arrogant neocolonial actor? Have the Norwegian government and people an increasing lack of control over a key industry to future wellbeing? Norway claims to be a humanitarian superpower backed by the international community which celebrates Norway’s role in peace making and exporting industry and management experience to the third world through programmes such as Oil for Development. Recent media reports and research, however, shows that through operation and investment the Norwegian government and private sector have become involved in a series of environmental damaging projects and corruption cases.
John McNeish is a social anthropologist and Ivar Kolstad is an economist. Both are Senior Researchers at CMI. Simen Sætre is a journalist for Morgenbladet and the author of the book Petromania. Petter Nore is Director of the Energy Dept. at Norad and the Oil for Development initiative.
