Pitfalls of South African Democracy

While it is important and prudent to recognize the formidable political advances made in South Africa since the end of Apartheid in establishing a modern, formal constitutional framework and organizing four successful national elections, several challenges still remain for democracy in South Africa. One such challenge is the lack of a viable and strong civic tradition in the country. By looking particularly at the role and development of the ANC since the end of Apartheid, Dr. Thiven Reddy will debate both the reasons for and consequences of this challenge, and thereby present an overview of some of the strengths and weaknesses of the South African political system as it is today.
