This is a country profile of the Democratic Republic of Congo, published in the 2000-2001 yearbook of the Norwegian Council for Africa (in Norwegian). The article introduces main political developments in the DRC after the 1994 genocide in neighbouring Rwanda, notably the first Congo war from 1996-1997 which led to the overthrow of President Mobutu, the second war that broke out in 1998, and the subsequent efforts to bring this war to an end.
