Outboard researchers (departure conditions/formalities)
Guest researcher abroad
If you are planning a guest researcher stay, please review the approval process for this at CMI. Please also ensure that you have the correct visa for your guest researcher stay.
Please speak with HR regarding applying to retain your membership in the Norwegian National Insurance Scheme during your guest researcher stay. Please also ensure that you have insurance for the duration of the stay; in some countries you must procure health insurance as well. You may reach out to HR for guidance.
If your guest researcher stay is related to a specific resarch project, you must also include your project controller in this discussion - to determine what costs are determined as eligible costs by the project and what costs can only be covered by CMI (if approved). See page: Research Funding Opportunities (Mobility grant etc.).
In addition, we recommend looking into your taxation obligations in the country you are visiting.
- Check whether Norway has a tax treaty with the country you are visiting: General tax conventions between Norway and other states - regjeringen.no
- Determine your eligibility for a tax exemption and if needed, obtain a new tax deduction card from the Norwegian Tax Administration. See more information here: Double taxation - The Norwegian Tax Administration
Leaving CMI for good
- Final settlement from CMI: you should recieve a confirmation from HR outlining your final settlement. If you have any questions, any employee debt, or any outstanding reimbursement claims, please discuss this with payroll before your final day at CMI.
- Insurance: please note that your insurance with CMI will lapse when your contract ends; this insurance is contingent on your membership in the Norwegian National Insurance Scheme. We therefore recommend procuring private travel insurance when leaving Norway.
- Pension from CMI: please note that your pension with CMI will lapse when your contract ends, but you are still entitled to the money that was accrued on your behalf in your defined contributions pension [innskuddspensjon] while you were employed at CMI. Make sure the bank has your new contact information and that you can access your pension information from abroad. Contact the bank for more information: Pension | SpareBank 1
- Pension from NAV: We also recommend ensuring that NAV has your updated contact information, to retain your old age pensjon from the Norwegian Government: Applying for pension from Nav when living outside Norway - nav.no
- Register your move from Norway with the National Population Register through the Tax Authorities: Moving from Norway - The Norwegian Tax Administration
- Taxation: Tax when you move to or from Norway - The Norwegian Tax Administration
- Even if you reported a move to the National Population Register, it does not mean that your tax liability to Norway ceases. Take action to ensure you no longer are taxable in Norway: Tax when you move abroad - The Norwegian Tax Administration
- To be able to access it and communicate with the tax administration it is recommended that you retain your electronic ID for at least three years after leaving the country. Make sure that the correct bank account is registered with the Norwegian Tax Administration.
- If you have been living in Norway for more than 10 years, special rules apply. Read more about this here.
- Customs: please check if you are obligated to declare anything to the customs authorities: Moving out of Norway - Tolletaten
- Moving with children: please inform the barnehage, SFO, school of your move.
- Forwarding address, post: please ensure that any mail that has previously been directed to CMI or your Norwegian post address is updated with your new forwarding address.
- Contact information: please share your private e-mail with CMI allowing us to contact you if needed.
Research funding opportunities (mobility grant etc.)
Generally speaking, there are two options for funding mobility through a research project: either (A) through a funding mechanism specifically designed for this purpose, or (B) by including mobility as part of a broader research project proposal.
A) Mobility through funding mechanism designed for this purpose
-
RCN - Research Stays Abroad
- This funding scheme is for Doctoral and Postdoctoral researchers that work on RCN projects as well as Early Career scholars of a FRIPRO project. The scheme funds mobility between 3 and 12 months around the world.
- Funding for Research Stays Abroad for Doctoral and Postdoctoral Fellows
- RCN - Researcher Project with International Mobility (FRIPRO)
- This call supports early-career researchers (0-7 years after PhD) in leading their own project while spending an extended period at a foreign research institution. Funding typically covers project costs over a 36- to 48-month period, including periods abroad and in Norway. Applicants must have lived in Norway for at least 12 months in the past seven years.
- Researcher Project with International Mobility (FRIPRO)
-
MSCA - Postdoctoral Fellowships
- There are annual calls from the European MSCA program to fund shorter (1-2 years) and longer (2-3 years) projects with mobilities. You cannot have lived in either the country of the mobility or the return country before the project.
- Postdoctoral Fellowships - Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions
B) Mobility in project proposals
You can include mobilities into most research project proposals. Please check with the project controller about the respective costs that can be funded. (Funding for family members is likely not possible with this option.)
