Through the last fifty years Nepal has gone from a strong monarchy, via a parliamentarian constitutional monarchy, followed by a Maoist insurgency and revival of monarchic rule, to a multiparty (soon federal) republic. Annelies Ollieuz will present some findings from her fieldwork in a village near Biratnagar, in many ways the birthplace of modern democracy in Nepal.

Ollieuz discusses the changes in local democracy over time, including the role of the Maoist insurgency, and the present lack of elected representatives as local elections have not been held since 1999. The presentation is based on an anthropological fieldwork in a village in the eastern terai of Nepal.
