Regional experiences in strengthening the gold extractive sector: Lessons for Tanzania
This webinar co-hosted with the British High Commission in Dar es Salam examined regional efforts to strengthen governance, accountability, and collaboration across Africa's gold sector and considers their relevance for Tanzania. As the country seeks to improve sector governance and address vulnerabilities to illicit financial flows, the discussion draws on experiences from Eastern, Southern, and West Africa. It highlights reforms, transparency and traceability initiatives, formalisation strategies, and capacity-building efforts that have enhanced regulatory effectiveness and supported more inclusive and sustainable sector development. Particular attention is given to approaches that have strengthened institutional performance, improved coordination among stakeholders, and increased the developmental benefits of mineral resources. Bringing together perspectives from government institutions, regional initiatives, civil society organisations, industry actors, and development partners, the webinar identifies practical lessons and emerging opportunities for Tanzania.
