This introductory chapter to the book on Chinese development aid and Africa  provides an outline of the book and its chapters. It gives an overview of China’s expanding economic and political engagement with the African continent and examines the development aid component. The analysis focuses on the evolving aid policies, volume, and disbursement trends. The chapter scrutinises the various components of bilateral aid, including grants, interest-free loans, and concessional loans, as well as funds channelled through multilateral organisations. The chapter also examines the evolving management of Chinese aid.
