The scholars assembled in these pages experiment with a variety of tones, analyzing while also lamenting. They describe their “struggles with finding voices and actions that do justice to the current levels of violence”, voicing uncertainties while encouraging us in the knowledge that looking hard at the unfathomable and describing it clearly is necessary for resisting it. Many are trying out new ways of writing—in poems, in epistolary intimacies and science-fiction futurist mockery—and new ways of painting, with words and with paint. They are compelled to stretch beyond the typical strictures of disciplined academese to forge new meanings, critiques, connections, and visions of the future. Because of the current repressive environment and efforts to silence or marginalise Palestinian right activism, two contributors have chosen to remain anonymous.
